Some people can quit drinking on their own or with the assistance of a 12-step programme or another support group (see below for links). Others require medical supervision in order to safely and comfortably withdraw from alcohol. The best option for you is determined by how much you've been drinking, how long you've had a problem, the stability of your living situation, and any other health issues you may have.
Often, the first step is to see your primary care doctor, also known as a GP. Your doctor can assess your drinking habits, diagnose any co-occurring disorders, evaluate your overall health, and make treatment recommendations. They may even be able to prescribe medication to assist you in quitting smoking.
